The Bandung Model United Nations (BMUN) 2016 is an international diplomacy event simulating United Nations (UN) sessions. The BMUN 2016 was held for the second time by. The BMUN 2016 carried the theme “Be the change you wish to see in the world International Study Center Widyatama University,” a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, with the hope of inspiring delegates to be able to see, formulate, discuss, and resolve issues from different perspectives. This year, there were four negotiating councils, namely the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and the Crisis Council. The topics raised were international issues including gender equality, Syrian refugees, conflict in Africa, and the 9/11 tragedy.
The presence of the Press Corps added insight and knowledge for the delegates in the world of journalism. On Wednesday (6/4), the opening ceremony of The Bandung Model United Nations (BMUN) was held very merrily with a gavel-striking procession by the Rector of Widyatama University, Dr. H. Islahuzzaman, S.E., M.Si., A.k. C.A, at the Park Hotel in the Cikutra area.
All committee members and delegates wore clothes from their countries combined with Sundanese accessories for men and angklung pins for women, in order to preserve the Sundanese culture of “Rebo Nyunda” promoted by the Bandung City Government. The Ambassador of the Republic of Romania to the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Madam Valerica Epure, gave a speech on the importance of diplomacy for young leaders for a bright future for the world.
The delegates from the People’s Republic of China, Vietnam, Singapore, and India were amazed by the traditional Jaipongan dance performance. The next day, the UN simulation session was held for three days at the Widyatama University campus in Bandung.
This international debate was organized by the International Study Center of Widyatama University, which consists of active students from various faculties within Widyatama University. The faculties at Widyatama include the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Business and Management, Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Communication Design. This activity received significant support from Widyatama University and the Widyatama Foundation with the hope of honing students’ communication skills, especially in English, and preparing them to compete in the global arena.
