The Faculty of Languages at Widyatama University in Bandung held a Language Week for high school students, featuring an English Contest, Japanese Contest, and public lectures, from January 18 to 21, 2006, in the Theater Room on the 6th floor of the Graha Widyatama Building, Jl. Cikutra 204 A, Bandung.
According to the chair of the Language Week organizing committee, Hero Gunawan, this was the second time the event had been held. The main purpose of Language Week is to provide insight into language, showing that language is not just a set of rules, but also a means of communication and a medium for acquiring knowledge. Therefore, the theme of this year’s Language Week was “Language as a means of communication and a medium to obtain knowledge.”
The contest, which involved high school students, included a speech contest, news reading contest, writing contest, English singing contest, monokatari, kana contest, and shuji contest. Meanwhile, the public lecture featured Tatang B Razak, Head of the Sub-Regional Economic Cooperation Directorate of the Directorate General of Asia Pacific and Africa of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Tatang presented a paper on “foreign language proficiency in international relations.”
