For the umpteenth time, our nation has experienced disaster and hardship. In October alone, three major natural disasters have struck our brothers and sisters, namely:
- Flash floods that hit Wasior (West Papua) on October 4, killing 150 people, leaving 150 missing and 6,000 displaced.
- A 7.2 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami in Mentawai (West Sumatra) on October 25, which devastated villages on the islands, killing 112 people and leaving around 600 missing, and
- Mount Merapi (on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java) erupted on October 26, destroying villages in four surrounding districts, killing dozens of people, injuring 83 with burns and respiratory problems, and displacing tens of thousands of people. Countless possessions were destroyed, and our brothers and sisters suffered immense moral losses as a result of these natural disasters.
While offering our prayers and sympathy, let us work together to the best of our ability to ease the burden of our brothers and sisters who are suffering in Wasior, Mentawai, and Central Java by raising humanitarian aid. “Widyatama cares for Wasior, Mentawai, and Central Java” As a form of solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are suffering, Widyatama is working to collect aid and set up a shelter for donated goods that will be distributed to the disaster sites. Let us show our concern by sending our donations to the shelter that has been provided (Widyatama Main Hall).
