Recently, a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Widyatama (UTama) conducted a Community Service (PkM) activity for the Padaringan Vegetable House Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Garut Regency.
Dr. Rina Tresnawati, S.E., M.M., Chair of the PkM, explained that her team provided introductory training for the MSME operators.
“Our Community Service Program was held at Rumah Sayur Padaringan MSME, located at Jalan Ahmad Yani Timur No. 12, Suci, Garut Regency, on December 14th, 2021,” said Rina recently.
According to Rina, the training was held because financial management is one of the most important areas in a large or small company, whether profit or non-profit, including MSMEs.
She further explained that company leaders or management are very interested in analyzed financial reports because the results can be used as a tool in making further decisions for the future.
“Bookkeeping is part of accounting. Bookkeeping is important for a company and is certainly done by large companies whose turnover is in accordance with Article 28 of the General Provisions and Tax Procedures Law (KUP Law),” said Rina.
Small businesses are also advised to do this. Although simple in form, bookkeeping followed by the preparation of financial statements, particularly income statements and balance sheets, can provide useful information to readers, both owners and other parties.
“For example, information about profits/losses in a certain period, accounts receivable and accounts payable, cash and cash equivalents, inventory, and so on,” explained Rina.
“In addition, bookkeeping is useful for recording every business transaction and serves as a source for preparing financial reports. Business owners can make plans based on these reports,” he added.
However, due to a lack of knowledge about proper bookkeeping and accounting for MSMEs, especially newly established MSMEs, this has become a problem in financial reporting.
To address this issue, a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Economics and Business at UTama implemented a Community Service Program (PkM).
The theme of the activity was “Improving Family Economic Capacity Through Empowering Managerial and Financial Skills, MSMEs in Garut”.
Rina further explained that the Padaringan Vegetable House MSME was only established in November 2021 and was still experiencing difficulties in the process of preparing its financial records.
“Rumah Sayur Padaringan MSME was founded by Mrs. Eti Rohayati and Mr. Sani Hotman,” said Rina.
This Community Service Program (PkM) activity was carried out in the form of material delivery conducted directly by Rina and her team, including discussions on the problems faced and training on financial bookkeeping.
Eti and Sani were greatly helped and expressed their gratitude to Widyatama University for organizing this activity at the Padaringan Vegetable House MSME.
Plans are in place for UTama to continue promoting PkM activities like this as a form of higher education institutions’ concern for the community, in order to increase literacy and socialize knowledge development.
