A community empowerment initiative by the Research and Community Service Cluster of the English Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Widyatama University has had a positive impact on Indonesian workers in Taiwan. The English Conversation training activity held at PKBM PPI Taiwan, located at Daxue Rd., East District Hsinchu City, successfully provided basic English language skills to 50 participants.

The Head of PKBM PPI Taiwan, Mr. Ir. Ananda Insan Firdausy, S.T., M.T, M.Sc., welcomed this activity. He expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the English Study Program cluster at Widyatama University in providing training that can improve the English language skills of Indonesian migrants in Taiwan.

Dr. H. Hendar, M.Pd., Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and also chair of the Research and Community Service Cluster, revealed that the purpose of this activity was to provide basic English language skills to the participants. “We want to help them to be more confident in communicating, especially in everyday situations,” said Dr. Hendar.
The teaching team involved in this activity consisted of Dr. Hendar, M.Pd., Heri Heryono, M.Hum, Ida Zuraida, M.Pd, Atri Nadia Astarina, M.Pd, and Meita Lukitawati, M.Hum. They provided online training for eight weeks, starting with written and oral tests to assess the participants’ initial abilities. The training material covered everyday topics such as getting to know each other, about people, travel and tourism, food and beverage, health, and in the city. The training took place from October 24 to November 15, 2023. Fifty participants were divided into two classes, class A and class B. The training was conducted in parallel.
“We hope that this training can provide real benefits in the daily lives of the participants, especially in improving their English communication skills,” said Heri Heryono, M.Hum, one of the instructors on the team.
The response from PKBM PPI Taiwan to this activity was very positive. They acknowledged that this training not only improved the participants’ English language skills but also provided them with motivation.

This activity, funded by LP2M Widyatama University and PKBM PPI Taiwan, was not only successful in providing direct benefits to participants, but also created positive relationships between the university and communities abroad. The Research and Community Service Cluster of the English Study Program at Widyatama University is committed to continuing to contribute to community empowerment through similar activities in the future.
