The word corpus may sound unfamiliar to some. A corpus can be described as an existing data source. It is a data source that contains linguistic units that are ready for research. Take a dictionary, for example. Dictionaries are created by authors or writers, and researchers can simply use them as a data source. Corpora were discussed on Saturday (20/4) at a workshop with the theme “Exploring Method and Corpus-Based Research” organized by the English Study Program at Universitas Widyatama. Held in the seminar room on the 4th floor of Building A, the workshop, which lasted approximately two hours, emphasized the use of corpora by students to conduct linguistic research, as discussed by the guest speaker, Dr. Elvi Citraresmana, M.Hum., a lecturer from the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Padjadjaran University. while Dr. Ervina CM Simatupang, M.Hum., a lecturer from the English Language Program at Universitas Widyatama, served as the moderator.

Dr. Elvi said that corpus-based research is currently not widely used by researchers in Bandung, especially students. Through corpus, students can more easily see other perspectives of data.
Until now, students have conducted research using qualitative methods, but the difficulty in obtaining data sources has resulted in lengthy thesis preparation. Through corpus-based research, students can more easily conduct research using both qualitative and quantitative methods. She added. (Ed)
