The National Sports Week (PON) is the main national sporting event held in Bandung, West Java (Jabar), from September 17th to 29th, 2016. An estimated 8,403 athletes, excluding host athletes, are expected to participate. PON XIX/2016 consists of 44 sports with a total of 366 men’s events, 297 women’s events, 36 mixed events, and 57 open events across 68 venues spread across 16 regencies/cities in West Java, competing for 756 gold medals, 756 silver medals, and 954 bronze medals, as well as 12 exhibition sports. West Java was selected as the host at the 2010 Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) member meeting in Jakarta on April 27th, 2010.
There is something interesting about PON XIX/2016 this time, especially in the Squash and Water Polo sports.
Students from Universitas Widyatama contributed in the following sports. Maudy Wafa Nadiyah (Accounting S1) is a squash athlete who successfully contributed a gold medal for West Java. This 2014 student defeated other provinces, particularly DKI Jakarta as the runner up in the medal standings and East Java behind her.
In addition, there was also Dzaky Sholikhul Rokhman (Accounting S1), a water polo athlete who won a silver medal for West Java. Although there was some controversy, the professionalism of the West Java water polo team, who played fairly, led them to win the silver medal. It is a source of pride for Universitas Widyatama to contribute as part of this major provincial-level sports event, which is held every four years.
With the achievements of these athletes, who are students of Universitas Widyatama, may this serve as motivation for other students to pursue their aspirations in all fields. Viva UTama!
