Utilization of Generative AI, Innovation by SMAN 21 Bandung to Improve Teacher Competence

PIKIRAN RAKYAT – In an effort to improve the digital literacy skills of teachers, SMAN 21 Bandung held an in-house training session with the theme “Digital Literacy: Utilizing Generative AI in Academic Writing.” This activity aimed to equip teachers with new skills in utilizing Generative AI technology to support academic writing. The training was held at SMA Negeri 21 Bandung and received full support from the Information Systems Study Program at Widyatama University Bandung, which was the main resource for the event. The main focus of the training was on utilizing Generative AI technology in developing books, learning materials, and modules. Generative AI is seen as a practical solution to improve the efficiency and quality of academic content developed by teachers.

Generative AI is a technology that enables machines to generate content, such as text and images, based on user instructions. In the world of education, this technology can help teachers create learning materials that are more interactive, interesting, and relevant to students’ needs. The training, which was held on September 6, 2024, provided teachers with an in-depth understanding of how generative AI works and its important role in the academic world. Teachers were invited to use this technology directly in the process of creating textbooks and learning modules, with the aim of increasing productivity while maintaining academic writing quality standards.

BRINGING MANY BENEFITS

Murnawan, S.T., M.T., a resource person from Widyatama University, explained that the use of Generative AI in education will bring many benefits. “By utilizing AI, teachers can focus more on developing creative ideas and content, while technical tasks, such as drafting and layout, can be assisted by this technology,” he said. During the training, teachers were introduced to AI platforms that can help speed up the process of writing and compiling learning modules. Teachers were also shown how AI can help edit and improve grammar and writing formats to produce more consistent and higher quality material. This training is the result of a collaboration between SMAN 21 Bandung and Widyatama University Bandung. This collaboration aims to improve digital literacy among teachers so that they can use the latest technology in their teaching activities. With this training, teachers are expected to apply their new knowledge to create more relevant and high-quality learning materials. Mr. Ir. Heri Suherman, S.T., Deputy Principal of SMAN 21 Bandung, stated that this training is part of the school’s commitment to improving teacher competence. “We are aware that digital technology, including Generative AI, will be an integral part of education in the future. Therefore, it is important for teachers to continue to develop themselves and adapt to these developments,” he said.

It is hoped that after this training, teachers at SMAN 21 Bandung will be able to use Generative AI to support the writing of learning materials more effectively. Thus, the process of writing books, modules, and other academic materials can be done faster and with maximum results. The quality of education provided to students will also improve with the use of this technology. In the future, it is hoped that this kind of collaboration can be expanded to other schools, so that more teachers will understand and utilize Generative AI in their daily academic activities. With this training, SMAN 21 Bandung has demonstrated its commitment to continuing to innovate in education and ensuring that teachers are ready to face developments in digital technology.
