
Clean water is one of the most important things in improving the quality of healthy life for people in a region. However, many people face obstacles in terms of the availability of clean water to meet their needs for bathing, washing, and toilet use. This includes residents located in RW 14, Cibeureum Village, South Cimahi District, Cimahi City.
Lecturers from the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Widyatama University (UTama), through a three-month Community Service (PkM) activity, conducted research so that the murky and smelly water in the area could be treated by their homemade purifier.
“The three main duties of lecturers are education, research, and community service. In this case, the community service involves applying the results of lecturers’ research, namely creating water purification devices for use by the community,” said Udin Komarudin, Ir., MT, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, on Thursday (1/4/2021).

In addition to Udin, other lecturers who participated in the Community Service Program were Nia Nuraeni Suryaman, S.Pd., MT, Martoni, ST., MT., Ida Farida, ST., MT., Heru Santoso, Ir., MM., Kresno, ST., and several Mechanical Engineering students representing their class.
In this activity, the Mechanical Engineering Study Program collaborated with the Cimahi City Housing and Settlement Area Agency (DPKP) and the Water User and Beneficiary Group (KP2A).
The aim was to help residents of RW 13, Cibeureum Village, overcome the problem of dirty water through the installation of a clean water filtration system.

The research and community service program was conducted over a period of three months, from October 10, 2020 to January 15, 2021. After that, they conducted evaluations and monitoring from January 16 to March 30, 2021.
“Based on the results of our evaluation of the clean water installation device, this device can treat cloudy and smelly water, making it clear and odorless. Therefore, it is suitable for everyday use, but not for drinking,” said Udin.

“This water purifier can supply clean water to meet the needs of 180 households,” said Udin.
In this Community Service and Research Activity, the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, UTama, and DPKP Kota Cimahi handed over a water purification unit with a capacity of 180 KK to the KP2A group in Cibeureum Village, South Cimahi.
