Private: PKM WIDYATAMA: MSMEs Need to Apply Trademark Rights to Franchising in the Digital Marketing Era

The academic community of Widyatama University Bandung conducted a community service program (PKM) by conducting research and training MSMEs on trademark rights in franchising in the era of digital marketing.

Widyatama felt that it was necessary to utilize economic rights through franchise agreements, which must be recorded so that entrepreneurs can quickly and fairly optimize economic value. This research and training was conducted by the PKM Cluster Team consisting of lecturers from the Widyatama Master of Management program.

The head of the Widyatama PKM Cluster Team, Nina Nurani, said that as entrepreneurs, even though they are still MSMEs, entrepreneurs need to pay attention to legal protection for creative products in order to guarantee rights, both moral rights and economic rights, through trademark registration. So far, MSMEs have done very little in this regard.

“The material I presented was related to the implementation of intellectual property rights, especially related to trademarks and franchising in an effort to develop MSME businesses in the era of Digital Marketing,” she said on Monday (12/30).

According to her, this PKM program is expected to provide solutions to the problems faced by MSME activists who are partners of Universitas Widyatama in facing and overcoming business challenges in the global and digital era.

As is known, the PKM program for the protection of trademark rights for creative products was attended by 26 MSME activists from the city of Bandung. Participants were trained in the procedures for registering trademarks and franchises.

Apart from Nina, other speakers included Mohd. Haizam bin Mohd Saudi, Suharno, Nurul Hermina, Keni Kaniawati, Yenny Maya Dora, Alfiana, Deden Novan Setiawan, Farida Nursjanti, Tanti Irawati, and Yusep Budiansyah.

Furthermore, Keni Kaniawati, in her presentation on Business Development, said that the development of MSMEs in Indonesia, especially in West Java, requires a conducive ecosystem to grow in a quality manner.

“For that, various elements are needed to support business development in MSME businesses from upstream to downstream, such as products, promotion, and financing,” said Keni.

The next presentation on Digital Marketing by Yenny Maya Dora and the Womenwill Gapura Digital Bandung Team stated that a solution to develop a business as a means of promotion that is fast, inexpensive, and practical is to implement digital marketing.

With the PKM through these training activities, it is hoped that Tini Gustini’s business as an MSME activist, “Serundeng Kalapa Indung,” as well as other MSME activists in the city of Bandung, will be able to run their businesses by diversifying through franchising by registering and recording their trademarks.

As a continuous activity, the PKM Cluster Team will follow up on this activity by providing ongoing assistance to other MSME activists as MSME partners of Universitas Widyatama

“We hope that the MSMEs under Widyatama’s guidance can go global. We are monitoring all progress. And we are confident that some of our partners will soon achieve this,” he said.

Another cluster member, Alfiana, said that the PKM Program is the third pillar of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) besides Education, Research and Development, which ideally should be internalized into the spirit of the entire academic community.

“So that the terminology is not just a slogan or jargon, but is implemented well on an ongoing basis and continues to become the culture of the academic community,” she said.

Thus, she said, lecturers, as members of the academic community, not only carry out educational and research activities but also carry out the third pillar of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, namely Community Service.
