The task of a writer is to make the information that is gathered and reported clear to readers. The inability to emphasize clarity is a failure of a writer. This was conveyed by Harry Bhaskara, senior editor of the English-language daily The Jakarta Post at the Journalism Workshop on Thursday, April 30 to May 1.
Harry added that information and ideas are often “frozen,” and it is the writer’s job to package them into an interesting presentation that can capture and maintain the reader’s interest in absorbing all the information presented. The Journalism Workshop, organized by the Widyatama English Club in the Seminar Room on the 6th floor of Widyatama University, was also attended by speaker Novan Imam Santosa, editor of Archipelago in the same daily newspaper.
This second event was intended for novice writers who have difficulty expressing their ideas or thoughts in writing. Using techniques such as free writing, participants were encouraged to express everything on their minds. This technique helps overcome writer’s block and, as the name suggests, “free writing” is done without regard to writing rules such as spelling, diction, or punctuation because this type of writing will go through an editing process to produce a good final product.
