Muhasabah Widyatama University: Where do we come from?

Muhasabah
On Saturday (August 30, 2014), Widyatama University held a Muhasabah event, inviting Cak Nur and Cak Ayub as speakers. The event was attended by all Foundation & Rectorate leaders and their staff, lecturers, and employees. “Widyatama University’s Muhasabah will be held, God willing, once a year, with the aim of bringing all employees and lecturers closer to Allah SWT,” said Mr. T. Ontowiryo S.E., MBA, as the Chairman of the Foundation when giving a speech before the Muhasabah event took place.
He also said that “This Muhasabah is the first stage in conducting self-evaluation for the Foundation and the University, because there will be a second Muhasabah which, God willing, will be held on September 1-3, 2014. The first Muhasabah focuses more on strengthening soft skills, while the second Muhasabah focuses more on hard skills, in relation to performance evaluation.”
Muhasabah comes from the word hasibah, which means to calculate or count. Muhasabah is identified with self-assessment or evaluation, or self-introspection. In his lecture, Cak Nur analyzed the contents of the Qur’an and its interpretations, opening our minds to the fact that everything from the formation of the earth to its destruction (the Day of Judgment) is explained in great detail. The formation of the planets, which often serve as guides, flora and fauna, and the formation of our parents.
“O you who believe, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow (the hereafter), and fear Allah, for Allah is All-Knowing of what you do,” [Q.S. Al-Hashr (59):18].
From the words of Allah above, there is an implied command to always perform muhasabah so that tomorrow will be better. In performing muhasabah, a Muslim assesses himself, whether he has done more good or more wrong in his daily life. He must be objective in his assessment by using the Qur’an and Sunnah as the basis for his assessment, not based on his own desires.
Therefore, performing muhasabah or self-introspection is very important to assess whether one’s deeds are in accordance with Allah’s provisions. Without introspection, the human soul will not become good.
