Loyal to Accounting, Alma Mater, and Ideals

A nut that never forgets its shell. This proverb perhaps accurately reflects the life and career journey of Islahuzzaman (61), Rector of Widyatama University Bandung. Starting his undergraduate education in the Accounting Department at Widyatama University (at that time still known as Bandung School of Economics or STIEB), Islahuzzaman decided to devote himself to this educational institution, which was founded in 1973.

On Wednesday (May 25), Islahuzzaman was met during his busy day at the Widyatama University Rector’s Office on Jalan Cikutra, Bandung. Wearing a batik shirt, Islahuzzaman spoke about his career journey and his tireless efforts in developing the world of education.

Islahuzzaman is a typical loyal person. For example, he decided to pursue a career in accounting from the beginning until now. This is evident in his educational background, from his bachelor’s degree to his doctorate. He also decided to continue working and contributing to the university he leads. At the age of 60, this father of three remains loyal to his ideals, which are to learn and continue learning.

After completing his undergraduate education in 1984, Islahuzzaman worked as an employee at one of Indonesia’s state-owned companies. He gave up a promising career in order to devote himself to the university where he gained his knowledge. Even though he studied at different universities when completing his master’s and doctoral degrees, Islahuzzaman remained convinced of one thing. His heart and steps remained with Widyatama University.

Islahuzzaman, who was very interested in accounting, believed that Indonesia was in great need of accountants. And he demonstrated his commitment to his bachelor’s and doctoral studies by pursuing an education in accounting. His fundamental commitment as Rector of Widyatama University was to clarify what was unclear and strengthen what was weak. He acknowledged that there was a lot of uncertainty within the university and that a solution must be found so that we can move forward together in developing this university.

The issue of teaching staff or lecturers is a challenge in itself. Lecturers are an important asset. If the enthusiasm and quality of the lecturers in teaching are good, other qualities will follow. Improving the competence and quality of teaching staff is a priority, he said.
