Private universities in West Java and Banten lack professors

Approximately 374 private universities in West Java and Banten with a total of 2,083 lecturers, only 5% or 105 lecturers hold the academic position of professor.

Director General of Science and Technology Resources and Higher Education at the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, Ali Gufron Mukti, said that the Ministry of Research and Higher Education requires that every PTS or study program must have at least one professor.

“Based on the number of PTS, this means that an additional 269 lecturers with the academic title of professor are still needed,” said Ali after attending the seminar “Seminar on Strategies for Achieving and Developing a Professor’s Career” at the Universitas Widyatama campus in Bandung on Thursday (October 25th, 2018).

Director General of Science and Technology Resources and Higher Education at the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Ali Gufron Mukti spoke at an ABPPTSI seminar at Universitas Widyatama.

Ali said that with 1,682 study programs, there is still a need for 1,577 lecturers with the academic title of professor.

However, the quality of higher education has become non-negotiable for private universities, which are required to produce competitive graduates.

“One of the important variables for lecturers is professional lecturers, including those with the academic qualification of professor,” he said.

According to him, problems can arise from the lecturers themselves, or from the Ministry’s policies, or from the implementation of academic positions.

In response to this situation, the Central and West Java PTSI BP Association held a “Seminar on Strategies for Achieving and Developing Professors’ Careers.”

The seminar discussed the lack of professors at a number of PTS in West Java in terms of policy, implementation, and tips for achieving and developing professors’ careers for lecturers.
