Community Service by FEB UTama Lecturers, Assisting the Product and Organizational Innovation Strategy of “Opak ODED”

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) lecturers at Universitas Widyatama (UTama) conducted a Community Service (PkM) program on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022.

Keni Kaniawati, Chair of the PkM Cluster Team, revealed that the lecturers in her team, namely Meriza Hendri, Fansuri, and Ifa Latifah, provided training and assistance to the “Opak ODED” business, which produces opak, a traditional food from West Java.

Opak ODED itself is located in Conggeang Wetan Village, Sumedang Regency, West Java. It is now managed by Ganjar R. Adiwijaya S.M., the second generation.

The training was attended by the owner, management, and 20 employees of Opak ODED.

The theme was “Opak ODED’s Product and Organizational Innovation Strategy During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” The focus was on solving the root causes of problems in human resource management.

It is known that the number of employees at “Opak ODED,” which was originally 80 people, has now been reduced to 50 people. This has disrupted the production process.

Therefore, guidance from academics is needed.

“Human resources are the main asset for business people,” Keni said recently.
“The main concept implemented by companies is human capital, so entrepreneurs are required to be able to manage it well,” he added.

To resolve the issues faced by Ganjar, the activity provided knowledge about innovative human resource management and employee understanding of the business.

On that occasion, Meriza Hendri explained the importance of employee management, “Opak ODED.”

“There is a need for the Opak ODED team to be responsible for employee management, because it involves more than 10 employees,” said Meriza.

This person in charge needs to be competent in human resource management so that employee productivity can be optimized in carrying out tasks and achieving targets.

Meanwhile, Fansuri explained that the basis of human resource management is employee commitment to carrying out their duties.

“It is hoped that employees can increase their sense of belonging to the company and commit to performing their duties optimally. Carefully and collectively declare their commitment to work professionally at Opak ODED,” said Fansuri.

Meanwhile, Ifa Latifah provided Ganjar and his employees with an understanding of how to increase innovation in their work.

“The key to keeping Opak ODED growing and developing is innovation by management and employees,” said Ifa.

This can be done by providing ideas to management. Ifa also encouraged Opak ODED employees not to hesitate to convey their ideas to Ganjar and management to analyze them.

What the PkM team is doing is in line with the hopes of Dudang Adihana, the pioneer of “Opak ODED,” which stands for opak Dudang enak dimakan (Dudang’s delicious opak).

“I established and developed this business to solve employment issues. It is hoped that it can create job opportunities for families and neighbors around the business,” said Dudang Adihana.

He also did not deny the challenges ahead for “Opak ODED,” namely the economic conditions and COVID-19, which have impacted employees.

“I hope that Widyatama lecturers can assist us in business management, particularly with regard to employees, so that the Opak ODED concept can grow and develop,” said Dudang.
