Ragunan High School Jakarta topped the rankings at the 2007 Widyatama Cup Taekwondo Championship for high schools throughout Indonesia, held at the Widyatama University Auditorium from March 1 to 3, 2007. The school’s athletes, trained by West Java’s star athlete Fadly Poyu, successfully won a total of ten gold medals, namely Maulana, M. Fauzan, Inca Mayasari, Gembong, Annisa, Ahmad Archie, Andikara, Vinny, and Ririn.
Meanwhile, SMAN 1 Kaimana Papua made a surprising appearance, coming in second place and collecting a total of three gold medals from Yu8nus Farisa, Fransiskus DR, and Karel Busira. According to the manager of SMAN 1 Kaimana Papua, Ahmad Maturan, they have only been practicing taekwondo for two years. Their biggest win in the second national championship they have participated in has contributed to the achievements of the athletes and the sport.
Meanwhile, the host city of Bandung won third place with one gold medal won by Ranti, a student at SMAN 3 Bandung. The gold medal was awarded to the participant in the women’s light heavyweight class for her victory over Lutfi from SMAN 1 Tasikmalaya with a score of 7-0 on the first day of competition.
The head of the organizing committee, Ilham Indro, said that the championship, which is a regular event held by the Taekwondo Student Activity Unit of Widyatama University in Bandung, is aimed at finding talented taekwondo athletes throughout the country.
For Ilham, the defeat of the host city of Bandung was predictable because the number of athletes from Bandung had decreased in this year’s championship. The championship, which was initially named the STIEB Cup during its first six years, changed its name to the Widyatama Cup four years ago following the university’s name change.
The competition system, which involved 314 participants from 63 high schools across Indonesia, consisted of individual and knockout rounds.***
