Widyatama University Lecturers Strive to Help West Java MSME Players Penetrate the Global Market

A total of seven Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), including tenants of Widyatama University (UTama), participated in a webinar so that their products could compete domestically and penetrate global markets, particularly Malaysia.

This activity was also a follow-up to the MoU between UTama and Parongpong Subdistrict, West Bandung Regency.

Packaged in the form of Community Service (PKM), UTama lecturers from five faculties, namely the Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Design and Visual Communication, and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, contributed their expertise and knowledge to boost and help solve the root problems of MSME actors in Parongpong Subdistrict.

They contributed their expertise and knowledge to boost and help solve the root problems of MSME players in Parongpong District.

The event was held on Saturday (2/10/2021) with the theme “Accelerating the Commercialization of Indonesian MSME Products in Foreign Countries”. The event was opened by the Vice Rector for Research and Cooperation at UTama, Prof. Dr. Mohd. Haizam Bin Mohd. Saudi. It was attended by Drs. Iwan Mustawan Azis, M.Ap., Head of Parongpong Subdistrict. The event was moderated by Gita Genia.S.E., M.M.

The seven MSMEs are Campernik, Reza Garden, Bellahasuara, Batik Shibori, Vennybrose, Rizky Abadi, and Wibi Acoek Basic.

It is undeniable that these MSMEs have faced several problems. Generally, they are constrained by capital, production processes, promotion, and other factors. This has resulted in minimal sales or payment schemes in the global market.

Therefore, this event is expected to be a joint solution in solving the problems faced by MSME players in the Parongpong District, West Java, and also UTama tenants.

On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Dayang Affizah binti Awang Marikan, Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Malaysia Sarawak, was invited to be the speaker.

She provided an overview of business potential in Malaysia, titled “Malaysian Economic Outlook & Business Potential.”

At the same time, it provides insights from various perspectives and procedures so that MSME products developed by UTama can enter the Malaysian market. It is also hoped that this will motivate business actors in the region, including in West Java.

He also explained the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and various business opportunities after the pandemic that could become the most profitable sales potential for MSMEs in Malaysia.

Other material was presented by Fathan K. Soetrisno, Managing Director of Scenery Global SDN. BHN. Malaysia.

At the closing of the event, the Head of the UTama Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M), Dr. Ratna Komala Putri, S.E., M.Si., revealed that the MSME players who participated seemed satisfied with the presentations from the speakers.

According to Ratna, this was evident in the question-and-answer session, interactions, and various solutions that were presented in the simplest language possible. The aim was to make them easy to understand and implement immediately.

The speakers also observed that the SMEs were highly motivated to participate in this event and assessed that these SMEs have great potential.

“We prioritize the empowerment of women, especially housewives, to create unique products that are marketable and capable of improving their economic status,” Ratna said recently.

She also explained that there are still shortcomings among these MSMEs, but with high motivation, they can overcome them.

“For example, Campernik SME has a very unique product but does not yet have the legal requirements needed to run a business, especially a culinary business. Campernik can form a partnership with the relevant government agency, for example, to obtain capital assistance and a business license in the form of a PIRT,” said Ratna.

“If the business scale is large enough, it will develop into BPOM and become a trademark. Other SMEs such as Reza Garden, Bellahasuara, Batik Shibori, Rizky Abadi, and Wibi Acoek Basic have obtained various kinds of information to penetrate the global market, not only in terms of sales and marketing, but also regarding market tastes, production scale increases, and export schemes,” she added.

With the conclusion of this activity, it is hoped that West Java MSMEs will be motivated to develop their businesses and penetrate the global market.
